My personal opinion, something fundamentally more important was achieved. In terms of footfall the night was an overwhelming success with numbers expected to succeed 2014’s inaugural festival. Then with the audience still gathered ‘Nu Projeks Collective’ quite literally took to the floor, with a freshly choreographed street dance performance, six hours practice is all the collective needed to dazzle the onlookers. The outside yard buzzed with guests admiring the latest work by renowned street artist ‘Inkie’, created especially for the show.įollowing a quick browse it was time for the prize winners, five in total, all celebrating urban art in their own distinct style with the aforementioned ‘Inkie’ congratulating the victorious. An excited vibe filling the room, all work’s savoured, every artist showcased. So back to opening night, the author arrived fashionably late to find the party already in full swing. A word of warning though, beware the carrots upstairs, their eye’s follow your every move. At this point I could wax lyrical about each individual piece, however I feel it more befitting the reader to get to Surface & appreciate the variety on offer. This year, a record number of submissions required the exhibition to extend into the upstairs project space. So Surface fired the rallying call & the artist’s responded. Add to the mix Graffiti’s birth in the 70’s & the dawn of the ‘Banksy’ era, all contributing influences to today’s vibrant art form. Billboards & adverts defaced by a consumer society who didn’t have the money to consume. Origins trace back to the 1930’s, with the United States strangulated by the great depression. Street Art as a genre is expanding at an ever increasing velocity. Completed, the wall made a wonderful backdrop to a mid summer’s opening party. Back then I had the privilege to document the artists at work.
